The path to wellness is often challenging and complex, especially for individuals dealing with both HIV and mental health or substance use disorders. Broward House stands as a vital source of support, offering the only comprehensive, holistic mental and behavioral health services, specifically for people living with HIV in South Florida. Our programs provide clients with a safe, stigma-free space to share their experiences and receive the help they need.
Positive Healing & the Power of Mental Health Support
At Broward House, we understand that mental health can lay the foundation for overall wellness. Our Positive Healing program addresses the unique mental and behavioral health challenges faced by people living with HIV. This program offers free mental health support, psychiatric assessments, and medication to low-income individuals in Broward County. Our approach is culturally responsive and trauma-informed, provided by Master’s-level clinicians, ensuring that each client receives care tailored to their specific needs.
Jeff, a former client, shares how the Positive Healing program became a turning point in his life:
“I didn’t realize how important mental health was until I came to Broward House. As a person living with HIV and suffering from substance use disorder, the Positive Healing program helped me improve in all areas of my life. Counseling gave me new insight that I didn’t have before.”
379 clients have benefited from our mental health services in the past year. Out of these, 148 individuals participated in our Positive Healing program, where they received the crucial support needed to manage their mental health while living with HIV.
Clear Paths: Meeting Clients Where They Are
Mental health and substance use disorders do not discriminate, affecting individuals from all backgrounds, regardless of income, insurance, or HIV status. Clear Paths is a free program to address these challenges and ensure everyone has equal and fair access to mental health services. Counselors “meet clients where they are”—mentally, emotionally, and literally — holding sessions in the office, at their homes, in the park, or anywhere they feel safe and supported.
This past year, 231 clients enrolled in Clear Paths, where they received the individualized support needed to improve their mental and emotional well-being.
This program is especially critical for members of racial and ethnic medically underserved communities who HIV, substance use, housing instability, and other social determinants of health disproportionally impact. Clear Paths helps clients embark on a journey to mental and emotional well-being by removing barriers to care.
Substance Use Treatment with Dignity
For individuals living with HIV, battling substance use disorder can complicate their health journey. Broward House provides the only substance use disorder treatment program in South Florida, both residential and outpatient, specifically tailored for people living with HIV. Our 6-month structured program restores dignity and helps participants establish a stable foundation for health and recovery before transitioning to more independent living.
Kevin, a former client and now a proud Broward House Ambassador, reflects on his experience in our substance use treatment program: “Broward House provided me the tools to get and keep clean. My addiction was a source of shame, and I was afraid that people would treat me differently if they knew I was in recovery. I did what was right for me, and I have no regrets. I’m living my best life my way and meth free. And it’s all because I asked for help.”
Broward House welcomes people of all backgrounds, genders, races, and sexual orientations, with a special focus on low-income and uninsured people. The organization is the largest treatment center serving the LGBTQ+ population in Broward County and the only program that tailors care for people of the trans experience. Additionally, Broward County recognizes Broward House as the leading agency for the treatment of methamphetamine use disorder.
Over the past year, 100 clients have received the support they need to address their addiction and begin their process of recovery.
At Broward House, we are committed to continuing this legacy of care, ensuring that everyone who walks through our doors can heal, grow, and live their best life. Whether through mental health counseling, substance use treatment, or holistic therapeutic support, we are here to guide our clients on their journey to wellness.
