I Am Worth It

I have been aware of sexually transmitted infections and the risk of HIV, and I would get tested regularly, at least every 3 months. I always convinced myself that I know these people I’m having sex with. They are mostly friends or acquaintances, and we rarely engage in anonymous hookups. I convinced myself that I wouldn’t catch anything. After all, I have never gotten any type of STI.

Well, after a three-some hookup, my girlfriend and I both contracted Syphilis. That’s when I began to worry. My girlfriend was even more concerned. I hated to see her worried, and we had curtailed things that we really took enjoyment in doing.

I quickly decided to get on PrEP. I believed that if I caught one thing, then I was surely at risk for contracting HIV. We made appointments and received our PrEP prescriptions right away. I never miss my daily dose. It’s not hard. I take some other daily medication, so I have just made it a routine to take everything every single morning.

Being on PrEP has made a tremendous difference. I no longer have that fear. I do not deny myself activities that I really like, and I continue to be tested at least every three months. I am a huge advocate for getting tested regularly and taking PrEP. I always bring up the topic with friends and, of course, with all our sex partners.
